Curious about a breastfeeding session?

This is a sign for you to bring your baby into the studio for breastfeeding photographs...  These days are fleeting. Capture it all.

A lot of mamas choose to ask me to photograph them toward the end of their nursing journey. They're getting ready to wean, or they're feeling like their toddler is less and less interested. The photographs are a way to celebrate the end of a beautiful experience, and also to seal it in time a bit.  But you can request this at any time. Maybe your nursing experience with your second or third is different than it was with your first, and you want to celebrate that, or maybe you just want to find a new way to mark this time. Photographs have a way of creating a portal into another time. A little time machine you can enter at will. Great photographs will bring back the feelings, emotions, and complexity of your bond with your sweet ones.

Breastfeeding can be a part of any bonding session -- it's not something that you have to plan with me in advance.  But a lot of women feel torn about nursing on camera.  It's intimate and can feel vulnerable for a lot of us who are not the most confident nursers, and it's not something everyone wants photographed. 

It can feel like a risk to ask me to capture you nursing your baby.  It's an act of vulnerability. But it's also a deeply beautiful visual representation of your bond.  The physicality and dynamics of nursing is unique to each pair.  I absolutely love seeing how mothers and their babes fit together as they nurse.

You can always opt not to share any of these images if they feel too private.  Nursing is one of the most intimate things we do, so you get to choose if the images are shared.  But it's also a tremendous piece of your relationship with your baby, and I highly recommend capturing it for yourself.

During breastfeeding, you're allowed to show or not show as much of your breasts or your body as you'd like.  Some women just flip down one side of their shirt or dress, just enough for the baby to access the nipple.  And some women opt to take off their shirts and have a real skin to skin experience with their babies.

You can cover yourself mostly with your baby, if you like, or, you can just let yourself be free.

This mama, above, was about to go into surgery the next day, and she thought this might be the last day she'd get to nurse her sweet baby. It was so beautifully emotional in the room, and I felt honored to hold that space for these two.

This mama, above, let her 1 year old nurse throughout the entire session with her three kids. It was so seamlessly integrated into our session, and didn't disrupt anything. Just added a layer of reality. The baby is tightly bonded to her mother, and takes great comfort in nursing. She didn't want to stop, and her mama didn't make her. I absolutely loved photographing this moment in time with this sweet family.

I love to notice little things while mamas are nursing in my studio. The way the baby's foot rests on her mom's arm. The way the baby's hands gently play with her mom's chest or fingers or hair. It's all worth documenting. Even the tiniest little moments feel like art.

Nursing isn't always glamorous. In fact, it's hard, sometimes tedious, sometimes challenging work. The photographs are meant to capture the range of experience. Not just the ease of the bond. But the struggle too. You fit together, you and your baby, but it's not simple. It's actually kind of incredible. You two are a puzzle.

And just as breastfeeding can be a part of any bonding session, every breastfeeding session will also include photographs of you and your baby just bonding. Playing, snuggling, being. Even breastfeeding sessions are made of mostly non-breastfeeding time. So the gallery of images will include moments of all sorts.
