Family sessions are an hour long in a beautiful spot in Colorado near or in Denver. We'll choose a location together that combines everything that you want in a session -- the right kind of light at the right time of day, a beautiful, quiet, safe place for your kids to explore and play, and a gorgeous setting for meaningful and love-filled candids and posed family photographs. I offer locations on the outskirts of Denver, and one or two in the city limits, that are calm, open, and ripe for exploration. One of my favorite things about a family session like this is that the children get to explore and play. A session should be fun, connective, love-filled, and relaxing. I want you and your family to enjoy the experience together.

WHAT WILL WE WEAR?
I'm a fan of you and your family wearing clothes that work together as a group. I like it when everyone in the group, except one person, wears solids. That one person can wear a print. No writing or insignias on your clothes. I recommend that you, as a family, dress in a palette. All warm tones for fall, for instance.
Here are some suggested looks for pregnant and not pregnant women, and for children.
I think husbands should always be super plain and not stick out (because he'll take up space anyway, don't need him to stand out more) - a grey Henley shirt or sweater, white linen shirt, jeans or tan slacks...
And here's a board of just color palettes to give you an idea of how to dress as a group.
You should wear good walking shoes. And the grass might be itchy... So prepare for that.
If you want to show me potential outfits, I'm happy to weigh in.
And finally: dress yourself in a way that makes you feel beautiful. This includes makeup. If wearing makeup will boost your confidence for the session, I am all for you wearing it. I don't expect you to look any certain way, and I personally have no opinion about whether you should wear makeup. It's all about what you want, and what will make you feel your best.
Black clothes mask body stuff if that's something you think about. Pin stripes can look kind of insane on camera. I don't recommend them. Wear something that you feel confident in. That's the main thing. If you feel beautiful, that goes a long way toward you looking like your beautiful self in the photos. I'll do my best to help you feel totally comfortable and at ease in the moment... The best thing I can do is try to help you stay present and not worry about how the photos are going to look.

WHAT AGES DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH?
I specialize in photographing young families. I recommend waiting to do family photographs with a baby until the baby is more interactive, so typically like 6-8 months. Young babies don't always focus where you want them to, and they might not be too engaged with the family for a session.
WHAT IF MY KID DOESN'T LIKE TO STAND STILL?
I like to do these sessions in nature because I believe that having a super dynamic, fun place to explore helps kids stay engaged in sessions. They may take a break from doing posed shots and want to climb, dig, or just walk around. I account for that in the sessions. I want you all to play. I want you to explore. This should be fun! And candids can be even more beautiful than the posed shots.
WHAT'S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS?
I offer family photographs all year round. There are benefits to doing sessions in all four seasons. In winter, the days are so short that the light is amazing earlier in the day, which is hugely beneficial for children and bedtimes. I like to schedule sessions during the Golden Hour in open and exposed locations, like the mountains. That means roughly an hour before sunset. In the late fall and winter, that means we can do sessions around 3 or 4pm. That's huge for little kids.
Spring is climbing toward a later Golden Hour, but the flowers and greenery can be a huge breath of fresh air.
Summer has a super late Golden Hour, but the lush greenery is amazing on film.
Fall has the obvious benefit of gorgeous reds, oranges, and browns. I absolutely love fall photos. We can start doing fall sessions earlier in the season higher up in the mountains. Because it gets colder sooner at higher elevations, leaves turn bright yellow and orange in the mountains weeks before they do in Denver.
I absolutely love winter sessions. They can look kind of bare bones, but I love the light, the snow gear, and the look of snow photos.

HOW LONG DO YOU TAKE TO EDIT PHOTOGRAPHS?
I typically take 7-10 days to edit your photos. I put the culled and edited selection into a private gallery for you and your family to look through and choose your favorites. Through the gallery, you're also invited to print the photographs using the only print shop I've used for the last 12 years.
Photographing you with your newborn and young children is a way to help you remember not only what that time in your life looked like, but what it felt like. An authentic photograph can transport you back in time. It can bring back the smell of your baby's head, the touch of her feet. It can bring back the joy, the relief, the frustration; most of all, a great photograph can reflect back to you the richness and depth of your feelings for those you love the most.
